1929

Founded in 1929

The Port of Tampa Propeller Club was founded to support commerce in Tampa’s growing port.

1940

World War II

During WWII the Port of Tampa was one of the largest U.S. shipbuilding and repair facilities for war vessels. By the late 1940s, the club had 175 members.

1950

National Recognition

As the port grew, the Tampa Propeller Club began holding events such as our popular Shrimperoo. Multiple members also won “National Member of the Year,” from the International Propeller Club.

1980

The World’s Largest

As the port grew, the Tampa Propeller Club began holding events such as our popular Shrimperoo. Multiple members also won “National Member of the Year,” from the International Propeller Club.

2000

Looking Towards the Future

The Propeller Club helped expand Tampa’s Port Authority Board in 2005 and has been recognized as Club of the Year multiple times. We look forward to you joining!

2020 Until Today

Advocacy and Legislative Action

2005

The club, along with the Port of Tampa Maritime Industries Association, successfully proposed an amendment to the Tampa Port Authority Enabling Act. This change, which was signed into law by the Governor, increased the number of Port Authority Commissioners from five to seven.

April 27,2012

The Tampa Port Authority and the Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Tampa, are pleased to recognize the month of May as Florida World Trade Month. International trade is the lifeblood of the Port of Tampa, which is engaged with more than 100 countries worldwide in cargo shipping.

Major Events and Conferences

2000 & 2010

The Tampa club hosted the International Propeller Club Convention in these years.

2024

The club hosted the International Propeller Club Convention again in Tampa. The theme was "On the Horizon," and the agenda included discussions on the future of the maritime industry, including topics like artificial intelligence, port security, environmental demands, and workforce development.

Awards and Recognition

The Tampa club has been recognized as the "International Port of the Year" and has received the "Southeast Region's Port of the Year" award in 2024 and 2025.

2001

In 2001, one of the club's Past Presidents, Captain John Timmel, was named International Maritime Person of the Year for his contributions to the industry.

2012

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn signs the proclamation on May 11, 2012, affirming National Maritime Day will be recognized on May 22.

"NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Buckhorn, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Tampa, Florida, do hereby proclaim May 22, 2012 as “NATIONAL MARITIME DAY” in the City of Tampa, Florida, and urge all citizens to join in this day of observance that pays special tribute to the benefits that the maritime industry provides as well as the people who serve as merchant mariners in service of our nation.. Dated in Tampa, Florida, this 11th day of May, 2012."
